During a semester studying in Istanbul my architecture studio assignment was to redesign two existing ferry stations. My process began by delving into the dynamic context and dissecting the movement associated with ferry stations. I became fascinated with mosques and the patterns forming and adorning them, I found that the hexagon was a powerful shape dictating much of the geometry. By repeating the hexagon form surrounding an axis, I captured the motion of the turning the station and created a dynamic level change for the visitor. The exterior of the station creates cascading seating to appreciate the historic skyline and a viewing deck on top. Within the station a user can see between each level change framing the surrounding movement and outside views. The smaller station also mimics this geometry on a different scale. The seating around the stations and the pier followed the geometric pattern in a discrete way. To separate ticketed ferry goers and people just using the pier for leisure, there is an opening to the water through the pier with potential to be used as a water garden.
